September 5th is a sad day for the music industry. Rich Homie Quan dies at 34. This was most evident at the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Awards. Playboi Carti won his first award at the event. The rapper had already paid tribute to Quan earlier in the day, but before taking the stage, he took the time to pay his respects to Quan.
It’s strange to think that Playboi Carti has never won an award. However, it was in this context that the elusive rapper took the stage. He thanks his mother, he thanks God, he thanks Billboard for giving him this award. Katie was stunned for a moment, continued her speech, looked at the prize in her hand, and changed direction. “RIP, Rich Homie Quan,” he told the crowd. He started shouting out Kwon’s team, which elicited cheers from the audience.
Playboi Carti pays tribute to Quan multiple times
Playboi Carti previously posted a clip from Quan’s music video on his Instagram Story. The two never collaborated on a song, but Cardi made it clear that he respected Quan’s musical talent. This isn’t the first time Playboi Carti has spoken out about fallen rappers in public. He paid tribute to the late, great Fredo Santana at a 2022 concert.
Playboi Carti also got emotional when talking about Juice WRLD. “This blows my mind, man,” he explained. “He’s really a goat.” Midway through the interview, Carti’s voice cracks as he reflects that he hasn’t spent as much time with Juice as he would have liked. “Even if we’re not together like that,” he pointed out. “We’re close.” Cardi also noted that he often talks about rappers who rub shoulders with peers like Lil Uzi Vert. He’s seen a lot, and sadly, Rich Homie Quan is the latest to join the miserable list.
