Actress Quinta Brunson joins Pharrell’s untitled coming-of-age musical, which takes viewers back to 1977 Virginia Beach.
The “Abbott Elementary” creator and actor will work under the direction of Michel Gondry, known for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”
The famous music producer will produce the film and his childhood memories form the background of the film. Brunson, 34, expressed her enthusiasm on Instagram Stories when she shared the casting news, which Deadline originally reported. She captioned the post simply with the word “excited,” along with a nail-paint emoji.
Universal announced its involvement, adding that Brunson will star alongside Anderson Paak, Kevin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Brian Tyree Henry, Missy Elliott, Janelle Monáe and Tim ·Meadows and other dynamic cast perform together.
The film is set in the vibrant Virginia Beach community in the summer of ’77 and was inspired by Farrell’s formative years growing up near the Atlantis Apartments.
However, specific details about Brunson’s role are still being kept under wraps. Farrell will produce the film under his I Am Other multimedia umbrella alongside Mimi Valdes, from a script written by Martin Hines and Steven Levinson.
Brunson has been working on her role since the third season of her acclaimed sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” in which she played teacher Jenny Tiegs. Not only does she star in the show, she also serves as a writer and executive producer. The show’s popularity secured its renewal for a fourth season.
