Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.” UMG argues that Drake voluntarily engaged in a rap battle with Lamar and should accept the outcome without resorting to legal action. They emphasize that diss tracks are a traditional aspect of rap culture, often characterized by exaggerated insults and not meant to be taken literally. Furthermore, UMG points out that Drake has previously used their platform to release tracks targeting Lamar, suggesting a history of mutual provocation.
In response, Drake’s attorney, Michael J. Gottlieb, criticized UMG’s motion as a tactic to avoid accountability for allegedly profiting from harmful misinformation. Gottlieb maintains that the lawsuit is valid and accuses UMG of exploiting artists while spreading damaging narratives.
The feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar intensified in March 2024 with the release of several diss tracks, culminating in Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” which accused Drake of being a “certified pedophile.” Drake’s lawsuit, filed in January 2025, alleges that UMG’s promotion of this track defamed him and led to public harassment.
