NLE Choppa faced harsh criticism last week after teasing his latest single “I’m Coming Out.”
When he revealed that the only content he had released was his new song “Or What,” which was released on September 6, social media users accused him of trolling the LGBTQ community.
NLE Choppa took until Sunday (September 8) to address the backlash. He responded to a tweet with a clip from Madya Returns. The implication is that the rapper confirmed that he is gay, but fans already knew that.
“Never said I was gay,” he replied.
Still, his post did little to quell the criticism. “Leave it all queer baiting for clout,” one person wrote. Another added: “You know what you’re doing when you say ‘I’m out’.”
NLE Choppa addressed the speculation surrounding his sexuality and his support for the LGBTQ community in a recent interview with PAPER magazine.
“It’s a beautiful thing,” he explained. “Because there were so many people who had something to say, it pushed me to stay deeply grounded in my goals. The beauty of it is it gave me the opportunity to say, ‘Oh, y’all think I’m like this? Okay, Let me give you some more reasons to feel this way even though I know I’m not and let me show some more love to those of you who agree with me because at the end of the day we are all human.
He continued, “Everyone is striving for some form of acceptance, and I think the most important thing is to accept yourself first.”
Meanwhile, over the weekend, NLE Choppa stepped out at New York Fashion Week in a series of bold looks. He has also walked for Off-White.
