Super Bowl champion Jacoby Jones has died at his home in Houston. He died on Sunday (July 14), but the exact cause of death was not revealed. He is 40 years old.
The NFL star who was drafted in 2007 has showcased his talents with the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers.
He also appeared on Season 16 of the American version of Dancing with the Stars, finishing third. Jones’ career blossomed during his time in Baltimore.
In 2013, he made history with a record-breaking 108-yard return for a touchdown in Super Bowl 47, the longest touchdown in Super Bowl history, leading the Ravens to a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
After retiring in 2017, Jones returned to his former college, Lane College, as a football coach. He joins the Alabama State coaching staff in 2022.
“Can’t lie. This is really hurtful. I just got the call after hearing the good words. Praying for him and his family, former teammates, friends and fans. “I know this player and this person. As an athlete, he was a top teammate and player who tried to put it all behind him.
“His emotions are a testament to his love for the game. As a person, he was the life of the party. Full of infectious energy and always smiling and/or laughing when you saw him. Such a loss. You will Deeply missed my brother.
The Baltimore Ravens issued a statement expressing condolences.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jacoby Jones. Jacoby had a unique ability to connect with everyone he met. His charisma, joy, and love created a unique presence that could illuminate Brighten any room or any dark day,” the statement read.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Jacoby’s family as we all begin to cope with this devastating loss.”
