Missy Elliott, through her mother, Patricia Elliott, donated $50,000 to Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless during a community food drive at the Joe B. Fleming Building.
The donation is made through a partnership with Third Baptist Church to provide free meals to community members. The Rev. Joseph Fleming said they “deliver hope” through hot meals, bike rides and mobile food pantry services.
Patricia Elliott discusses her family’s past struggles and why giving back is important to them.
“Life is so short,” Patricia Elliott said. “You can go up today and go down tomorrow. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay down because we’re almost there, which is why we’re very sensitive about our giving and giving back to the community.”
Missy Elliott has deep ties to her hometown. Portsmouth dedicated Missy Elliott Boulevard in her honor in October 2022, renaming a portion of McLean Street after the Grammy-winning artist. The street dedication is part of the development of the city’s entertainment district and recognizes her global impact on music and culture.
The Virginia native made history many times during her career. She became the first female rapper to have six consecutive platinum studio albums and the first female rapper to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Her philanthropy was recognized when Governor Glenn Youngkin proclaimed October 17, 2022, Missy Elliott Day.
Portsmouth Homeless Volunteers will use the $50,000 donation to provide food, shelter and housing assistance to those in need. The nonprofit runs programs that provide people with a safe place to sleep and help them get back on their feet.
Elliott’s donation goes beyond the latest donation. She has been supporting Portsmouth families through rental assistance programs and holiday toy drives. Elliott’s recent charitable efforts include rent relief for families, $60,000 in toys for children and shoes and socks for elementary school students.
