Mike is an eloquent man who has become one of the more sly and positive forces in hip-hop today. The rapper occupies a corner with left-of-center MCs like Earl Sweatshirt and Wiki, but he’s nestled in his own space. His music is low risk and high reward, and his projects are almost guaranteed to satisfy fans of melancholy, masterful wordplay combined with adventurous sounds. In this age of microwave content and “here today, gone tomorrow” artists, few can achieve this kind of consistency.
Mike goes for bold production, and his unique drawl and melodic tenor help his technical yet simple raps hit home while sounding effortless. The 26-year-old is wise beyond his years, and his dual mastery of beats and beats has cemented his elite status in contemporary rap. He sounds familiar with classic boom-Bap production as well as bass-boosting modern trap beat, and he delivers an incredibly edgy signature—the way he slithered on Niontay’s “Real Hiphop” last year is worth studying . Mike found his pocket and stayed in it – he always sounded so good, no need to ruin the party. To the untrained eye, he may sound monotonous, but to alt-hip-hop nerds, he’s untouchable.
Mike is also incredibly prolific: he’s released 12 projects since 2017, and superfans will claim that he’s been on a classic path since 2019’s Tears of Joy. His 2023 album Burning Desire landed on multiple “best of” lists, and his latest project Pinball (his first full-length collaboration with producer Tony Seltzer) is easily on make it happen. (When it came out in March, it was on repeat in my house for days.) Mike is a great beat picker and fine producer, and his pen is smoky, poetic, and intuitive. His self-analysis was a balm and further proof that he was creating beautiful art that happened to be selling out concerts across the U.S. and Europe. Regardless, Mike’s heartfelt lyrics and mind-bending production make this Metro show an excellent choice for extraordinary hip-hop.
