MC Lyte has given some new insight into her personal life, opening up about her divorce, finding new love, and even the truth behind rumors about her sexuality.
The iconic Brooklyn rapper appeared on The Breakfast Club on Thursday (August 8) while attending a press tour in support of her upcoming album 1 Of 1 and in Brooklyn During a special event, she received the key to the city.
Toward the end of the hour-long conversation, Charlamagne asked Wright how she felt about publicly discussing her business, referring to reports about her divorce, which she reconciled last year, 3 years after she and ex-husband John Veatch It’s been nearly three years.
“I don’t know that it bothers me so much, I just love having the opportunity to [my truth] Tell,” she says, starting at 51:30. “So by that point, you’ve said what you want to say; I can say what I want to say. At that time, it was really difficult to be able to give your opinion very directly. We didn’t have a platform that we could technically use. So, yes Yeah, say what you want to say, and then I’ll say what I want to say.
She continued, “Now you can write what you want, post it and people can get it. So when the whole divorce thing happened, I just saw all this stuff like, ‘He’s trying to get this,’ or , “she gotta keep her…” it wasn’t “she gotta keep” he never tried for that, we had a prenup and he had his own thing and I’m sure he was happy I didn’t want any of it any part of.
“So, we made an agreement early on that we were going to have a prenuptial agreement and that was it. I just didn’t like their turn. But it’s not like I didn’t expect that: People will say, anything that gets clicks is So. So I’m glad to set the record straight.
The conversation quickly turned to rumors about her sexuality, with MC Lyte even calling Breakfast Club co-host Jess Hilarious one of the people who was surprised to find out she was married.
While she didn’t offer details, the “Cha Cha Cha” rapper admitted that the public perception that she might be a lesbian isn’t entirely unfounded.
“When I say, ‘People are going to tell you you like something before you know what you like? My biggest message to the younger generation is don’t be prepared to put yourself in a box,” she said. “You’re learning. That’s the way life is, going from your teens to your twenties, you see things; I had to learn a lot later in life: Everything you think about, doesn’t need to happen. It can be Take a thought and leave it there. What you see others doing is not necessarily what you live.
“Growing up as an only child, things are very impressionable. So it was very important to me to be able to choose my own life for myself. So, did that bother me? Maybe at first. But then it became, ‘ Oh, okay. If that’s how you want to feel.
Wright added: “It’s not that these types of things haven’t happened in my life. But it’s not all who I am. When you’re young, especially in this industry, what do you think? “Well, Let’s make this happen. “The sad thing is, a lot of guys are stuck there, right? They hold on to what other people want them to be, or are happy with who they are. “You can’t look like that and want to be with a guy, Or find men attractive.
“I’m getting married… First of all, I’m more traditional than anyone could imagine. So I’m getting married because I believe in the sanctity of marriage and partnership. It’s devastating to me that it doesn’t work. But it’s also It requires me to take action and take responsibility for how I speak and behave; and for how others feel.
In January 2023, MC Lyte officially launched her new relationship with a post on Instagram to celebrate the new year. But the media didn’t seem to take notice of the new couple until Super Bowl Sunday, when she posted a photo of herself and her man wearing matching San Francisco 49ers jerseys with the caption: “My baby my love [heart emoji]”.
According to Essence, the rapper is partnered with tech professional Aaron Johnson, whom she allegedly met at a charity event and the two “bonded over their love of community work fate”.
Lana Moorer, 53, gushed about her new relationship while chatting with the Power 105.1 crew.
“When you call, say who you are. I’m a better person, so the people I invite reflect that,” she told Charlamagne and DJ Envy. “And I love him. Are we in a rush to get married? No: He gets married and divorced, I get married and divorced; so once you go through marriage, we’re not jumping right into it.
She concluded: “But that’s what we’re working on. And he’s nothing like a roughneck. He’s truly a ray of sunshine and unlike any type of person I’ve ever been around. So, I have to know that’s OK.
