Lloyd surprised Ashanti and her audience at her last show before she goes on maternity leave.
At the Tacos & Tequilas event on Saturday (June 1) in Kansas City, Ashanti looked confused as her “Southside,” featuring Lloyd, started playing because it didn’t appear to be included in her pre-planned set in the list.
Moments later, the Atlanta native was shocked when she ran on stage and started singing the 2004 hit.

Nellie and Ashanti’s unborn child received a special message from future “uncle” Lloyd last month.
The R&B singer took to Instagram on May 20 to share a photo of him and Ashanti singing to her belly on stage.
He wrote: “Dear baby Haynes, you are surrounded by love, positivity and people praying for your work [sic] This idea started before you were born.
“One day I will tell you about the songs I got to sing to you when I was in your mother’s womb, how your mother changed my life, and how your father was there when I needed a little love and guidance. My side. Can’t wait to meet you and make you laugh, Inshallah, your Uncle Ladi. [infinity emoji, heart emoji, baby emoji]”.
Ashanti was visibly moved by Lloyd’s words, commenting under his post: “Omg I’m crying you know I won’t…Thank you Ladi love you so much!!!!!! “Such beautiful and meaningful words…I really appreciate you. I actually cried.
Essence published an interview with the 43-year-old Ashanti shortly after she announced her pregnancy in April, in which she also confirmed her engagement to Nellie.
“This new year in my life is a blessing filled with love, hope and anticipation,” she said. “Becoming a mother is something I’ve always looked forward to, and sharing it with my family, fiancé and loyal fans who have been so supportive of my career has been an amazing experience.”
The two dated for ten years and broke up in 2013, but rekindled their relationship in 2023.
