Regarding the ATL vs. NYC fashion debate, Lil Yachty originally told podcast guest and New York native Cash Cobain:
“I feel like New York doesn’t have this – I don’t want to say identity – but everyone used to just imitate Atlanta. You said it yourself. Even, like, Atlanta was very influential. […] Style-wise, I don’t think there’s anything bad going on in New York fashion.
Lil Boat also specifically targets people from the Bronx and Queens: “I think people from those suburbs — Queens, the Bronx — are even going to come [Manhattan to shop]?
It didn’t take long for some of New York’s best to hit back at Lil Yachty’s comments, with Juelz Santana posting a rebuttal on Instagram.
“We all love Atl but did @lilyachty say fly [ninja emoji] Biggest trendsetter from ALT WOW so much love brother,” he wrote.
He then highlighted the fashion influence of himself and Dipset rapper Jim Jones on hip-hop culture, as well as the influence of other New York fashion pioneers such as A$AP Rocky and Fabolous.
Fivio also chimed in, writing on
After receiving backlash, Lil Yachty attempted to clarify his comments in a video posted to TikTok.
“When you go back to a certain time, it’s definitely New York. But if you think about lately, all the trends are coming out of Atlanta!” he said. “First of all, I have nothing but love for New York. I think there’s no world in the world Many of the fastest people were born in New York.
He added: “If the Bronx feels a certain way about this comment, I apologize to them. Amiri, come down and do your thing. I’m in New York so don’t fucking rob me. This is a joke.”
However, he also firmly believes Atlanta is the more influential city in the fashion world.
