I’ve long harbored the unsubstantiated belief that Lil Yachty internalized all the criticism he received early in his career and has been quietly dismissive of all the past accusers of subverting their view of rap as a genre The old man expected to take revenge privately.
Regardless, he seems to have been on a mission over the past few years to prove that he can dominate almost any rap genre while remaining lyrically on par with luminaries like Drake and J. Cole.
The next subgenre on his hit list is British drills. Rising star Nemzzz’s “It’s Us” checks that off his list while also underscoring his recent goal of using his platform to provide young artists with the support his predecessors never gave him. Yachty seems determined to lend a hand, collaborating with Gus Dapperton on Lyrical Lemonade’s recent album and lending his pen to relative unknowns like DONTKALLMELUXXY — all while continuing to push the boundaries of what’s considered a merely “hip-hop” artist. With Faye Webster, James Blake and Fred Again.
Nemzzz, meanwhile, just landed one of his biggest co-signs to date after releasing his mixtape Do Not Disturb last week. The 17-year-old British star continues to rise in the United States after solidifying his status at home.
