Lil Nas X is at a musical crossroads. The rapper has had several chart-topping singles, but it’s been a while since he made headlines for music rather than controversy. Lil Nas X’s talent isn’t a topic of debate, but his ability to refocus the narrative on his talent rather than his image is proving more important than ever. Enter “Dream Boy.” The rapper dropped a trailer for his new-age video, which features a zany setting and split personality themes we’ve seen many artists attempt before.
The trailer runs for less than two minutes. Lil Nas X can be seen floating on a wreckage in the middle of the ocean until a future version of himself visits him. The future version’s white and pink gear and helmet are reminiscent of the Power Rangers. “I’m a higher version of you,” Lil Nas X said. “I’m going to help you save yourself. It’s time to remember who you are… who you really are.” Futuristic Lil Nas ‘s video. Then, a portal will appear in the middle of the ocean, and regular Nas X will jump through it.
Lil Nas X hasn’t released an album since 2021
Before doing so, he took note of the song playing in the background. “Wait,” he said. “I know this song.” The song is hinted at as being titled “DREAMBOY.” The screen then switches to black and the text “Phase 1 Episode 1 – Let There Be Light” appears. Lil Nas X provided more context via Instagram, writing that DREAMBOY “disappeared” when the world needed him most. Nas X has always brought conceptual weight to everything he does, but this new era appears to be his most ambitious yet.
It will also mark Lil Nas X’s first wave of new music in years. The rapper has teased that his mixtape “Nasarati 2” will be released in 2024, but the full tape is yet to come out. Instead, various clips from Nasarati 2 have been exclusively uploaded to SoundCloud. In terms of studio releases, Lil Nas X hasn’t released new material since 2021’s Montero. We’re excited to see what he has.
