Rapper Lil Durk now faces charges of financing the elimination of witnesses in connection with his 2022 murder, according to newly revealed court documents.
Federal prosecutors allege that the 30-year-old Chicago native used his wealth and influence to offer rewards to individuals connected to the case, including the family of a witness.
The charges are part of ongoing proceedings linking Lil Durk, real name Durk Derrick Banks, to the shooting death of 24-year-old gang leader Stephon Mack outside the Roseland Youth Peace Center in Chicago.
Mike was a member of the Gangster Disciples and was shot to death in January 2022.
The charges paint a broader picture of the rapper’s alleged tactics, which authorities believe focused on neutralizing potential threats.
“Lil Duke’s modus operandi was clear: He would use his power, money and influence … to endanger anyone he believed posed a threat, including witnesses in this case,” prosecutors said in court documents.
They claim the operations were conducted clandestinely through intermediaries, although Durk remains under scrutiny and jailed.
Lil Durk’s legal troubles stem in part from prosecutors’ decision to tie him to a series of revenge actions they believe were orchestrated following the 2021 killing of his brother Dontay Banks, also known as DThang.
Investigators cited social media activity, lyrics (including a reference from Durk’s song “Ahhh Ha”) and recorded jailhouse phone calls as evidence of his involvement in multiple violent plots.
Even though Lil Durk is a prominent figure in the drill music genre and a father of several, he remains the focus of a federal investigation into gang violence.
He has not yet been formally charged with Mack’s murder, but mounting evidence continues to advance the federal government’s argument for detaining him during pretrial proceedings.
Lil Durk is in custody for his alleged role in an alleged murder-for-hire plot with five men associated with his OTF group.
Federal prosecutors in California indicted Carvon London Grant, DeAndre Dontrell Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsay and Asa Houston on charges of conspiracy to commit Murder for hire and murder for hire involving death.
Lil Durk is accused of paying the men to kill rapper Quando Rondo.
Instead, they shot and killed Quindo Rondo’s cousin, Savia Robinson, in Los Angeles in August 2022.
The shooting is believed to be retaliation for Quando Rondo’s alleged involvement in the death of rapper King Von in November 2020.
King Von, whose real name was Dayvon Daquan Bennett, died at the age of 26 after being shot multiple times during an argument in Atlanta, Georgia.
The latest revelations from prosecutors played a key role in a judge’s decision to reject Lil Durk’s multimillion-dollar bail offer and lock him up in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center.
The court found that no combination of conditions could reasonably ensure the safety of witnesses and others involved in the case if Durk was released.
