Earlier this week, Tyler Perry spoke with Keke Palmer on her podcast Baby, This is Keke Palmer . Soon after, some of his comments went viral. At one point in the episode, Perry responded to criticism by suggesting that his movies have consistently depicted black women in distress. According to him, critics have no right to dictate what stories he decides to tell through his films, nor should they be considered less important than other stories.
“A huge portion of my fans are disenfranchised. You can’t drive your Volvo to therapy on the weekends,” he explained. “Who are you to say which black story is important or should be told? Get out of here with this bullshit.” .

Perry’s comments were met with backlash, including accusations of misogyny. Now, Palmer defends X, arguing that critics are directing their anger at the wrong entity. “The enemy is not Taylor, but the system that makes it difficult for multiple black artists to shine at the same time,” she began. “Oppression turns you against those who are given the chance to shine, rather than questioning why there can only be so few at one time. Taylor is not the gatekeeper for all black stories, he is just a creative who breaks through the system. The same goes for advocating for others to fight , don’t hate Taylor because of his work, many people like him.
