Kanye West’s former GOOD Music artist Kacy Hill is opening up about her “crazy” experience with the label.
During a recent performance, the Phoenix-born singer took a break from the show to speak to fans about the struggles she went through while signed to Yip’s imprint with Def Jam and her attempts to get out of her contract.
Hill first explained how Def Jam paid to shoot the cover art for her second album, then they suddenly did a U-turn and told her they weren’t sure if they still wanted her on the label.
“I was like, ‘This is crazy, because I don’t want to be here,'” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Well, do you want me or not? What are we doing here? I was really in a situation with Def Jam Records.
Hill later said that Def Jam informed her that they would only let her go with Kanye’s permission.
However, her efforts to get in touch with her then-record label bosses proved difficult because around that time, Ye “decided he didn’t want to use email, and he didn’t have an assistant,” she said.

It was six months after Hill attended the rapper’s Sunday service performance that he was finally able to have a face-to-face meeting with Mr West.
“I ended up going to this office in Calabasas and he said, ‘Why are you here?'” she continued. “I was like, ‘Well, I need to get out of this deal.’ He said, ‘Okay. What do I need to do? ‘
“I was like, ‘You can text anyone and say I’m done.’ So he did and it was done.
Interestingly, Kathy Hill said she subsequently played some material from the second album for Kanye, who later became interested in her music again.
“I played him my second record and he said, ‘This is cool. Can you make it a gospel song? ‘I was like, ‘Sure. Anything you want.’
Reflecting on her departure from GOOD Music, Hill said: “This is a true story and I’m not exaggerating anything. It’s crazier than I can describe.
Kacy Hill joined GOOD Music in 2014 after Kanye West discovered her music while working as a backup dancer on his Yeezus tour.
She released her debut EP Bloo on the label in 2015, followed by her debut album Like a Woman two years later.
Although Hill never appeared on a song with Ye, she did have some high-profile collaborations with people close to Ye, including Travis Scott (“90210,” “Okay”) and Kid Cady (“Releaser”).
Her second album, Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again, was finally released independently in 2020.
