Joey Bada$$ has been announced as the 2024 Artist-in-Residence at NYU’s Clive Davis School of Recorded Music.
A report from Variety on Friday (September 27) confirmed that Joy will be the first person to have “multiple points of contact with arts and education disciplines throughout the residency.” The rapper and actor will be hosting masterclasses, lectures, conversations and Q&As throughout the year on topics including music creation, songwriting, the business of music publishing, film and television, and social impact.
In a statement to the press, Joy said: “I am honored and humbled to be invited to be the Artist-in-Residence at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute. I am excited to share my experience and knowledge with students and am convinced that I I will also learn a lot from them. I am committed to building community across departments, which is another wonderful step in this journey.
Nicholas Sansano, chairman of the Clive Davis Institute, added: “We are delighted to host Joey. We believe that the current economic model of the music industry does not fully allow creatives to treat one thing as their sole source of income and Ongoing relevance. Joy, an accomplished performer, songwriter, actor, and social advocate, is able to deliver this very real message to our students with first-hand credibility.
Sansano continued, “Equally, if not more, important is his investment in the mentorship and overall well-being of young professionals. He is a relatively young artist who has already made a very tangible difference by prioritizing the greater good. Commitment – Actions and messages our students need to see and hear to make a lasting impact.
The 29-year-old shared the news in an Instagram post, adding, “Classes are on.”
Joey Bada$$ won’t be the only entertainer on NYU’s campus this academic year, as Eve was also recently announced as the 2024-25 Scholar in Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
The year-long residency, which begins Sept. 21, will feature the Philadelphia native in “a series of meetings, classroom visits, and intimate conversations with students and faculty” about her career and the evolving music industry.
“You guys, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m excited to announce that I will be joining the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development as a 2024-25 Scholar in Residence,” Eve said on social media announcement.
“On September 21, I kicked off my year-long residency with a welcome event at NYU. I hope people will get to know who I am outside of music. I’m looking forward to getting to know the NYU community.
The news coincides with the release of Eve’s upcoming memoir, “Who’s That Girl,” co-written by renowned hip-hop journalist and NYU adjunct professor Kathy Iandoli, which hits stores on September 17.
