If you’ve been following Jessie Reyez on social media, you know exactly which song we’re talking about. After all, the now-released clip has appeared on nearly every reel lately, teasing a song that was originally touted as a comeback last October. Well, the unprecedented collaboration with Big Sean finally sees the light of day today!
Jessie, who often performs the song at live shows and incites the crowd to yell “shut up” with a call-and-response hook, has been checking her fans’ energy (and patience) for some time. Written as a reflection on the time she spent crying over the men beneath her (as she mentioned in her Instagram post), the song talks about Jessie feeling like a musical icon – A person whose phone is full of choices and whose bank is full of money.
Big Sean is here too, with his fierce muzzle and smooth speech, his image is all too familiar to us. After all, who better to join us bar to bar on the track than the man who sang “I Don’t Fuck with You” to us? After a single earlier this year that was overshadowed by controversy over Kendrick-Drake (a rapper often accused of stealing Sean’s traffic), “Shut Up” is finally Sean has a chance to shine ahead of this year’s album release.
“Shut Up” gives us a chance to embrace the rapper’s suave persona once again as he takes a seemingly more introspective approach on his upcoming album.
