tony buzbee has fired back at JAY-Z’s legal efforts to smear him, calling the mogul’s attempt to impose sanctions and dismiss Jane Doe’s lawsuit an “unprecedented attempt to silence victims.”
Buzbee represents Jane Doe after she accuses JAY-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting her when she was just 13 (Jane Doe) strongly refuted the rapper’s legal team’s accusations of misconduct and indiscretion.
The Houston-based attorney said the rap mogul’s legal team has gone from defense to intimidation, accusing them of trying to undermine the case by discrediting the accuser and his lawyers.
“Carter’s celebrity status does not entitle him to special treatment from the court,” Buzbee said in the filing, stressing that his investigation into the allegations was thorough.
The lawsuit alleges that in 2000, Jane Doe was drugged and assaulted at a party after the MTV Video Music Awards.
JAY-Z’s attorneys argued that the case is riddled with inconsistencies, noting that NBC’s reporting on the case raised questions about details in Jane Doe’s account, including the location of the alleged attack and other specific details.
However, Buzbee claims these differences are the result of trauma-induced memory loss, a common phenomenon among survivors of sexual violence.
Buzbee also pushed back against accusations that his company was sloppy and irresponsible in its review of Jane Doe’s allegations.
According to the documents, multiple attorneys, including a retired police detective, conducted rigorous interviews and research to corroborate her claims before filing the lawsuit.
Buzbee pointed to the groundwork his team did to verify Jane Doe’s allegations, including exhaustive research into the events surrounding the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards and JAY-Z’s whereabouts that night.
Buzbee said his evidence allegedly contradicted JAY-Z’s claims, claiming that while photos showing JAY-Z at an afterparty in Manhattan did not match Jane Doe’s description of the afterparty she allegedly attended, they The photo did not illustrate the rest of his condition.
The NBC report relied upon by JAY-Z’s lawyers acknowledged that “its purported findings ‘do not necessarily mean the allegations are false.'”
Buzbee maintains that his client’s description of being taken to a private residence matches the details of the alleged attack, which is further supported by the links between JAY-Z and co-defendant Sean Combs, including their Attend an exclusive gathering of history in the area.
“We’re not going to speculate on whether there was an after-party,” Buzbee said, “but her detailed description of the venue is consistent and specific with what happened that night.”
Buzbee maintains that his investigation met all legal standards and went well beyond those of ethical representation.
Buzbee also claims that his law firm has been harassed, claiming that individuals associated with the JAY-Z camp have contacted his employees and clients urging them to file baseless complaints against him.
Buzbee believes this alleged harassment is part of a broader strategy to intimidate and undermine him as Jane Doe’s attorney.
Buzbee didn’t hold back on JAY-Z’s request to sanction him for alleged procedural violations, calling the move “factually and legally baseless” and accusing JAY-Z’s legal team of using the motion as a way to avoid discovery intimidation tactics.
“This is nothing more than an improper attempt to intimidate plaintiffs and their attorneys,” Buzbee’s filing reads.
