Is The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song the greatest hip-hop song of all time? DJ Jazzy Jeff thinks so.
On Thursday (January 29), 92.3’s Big Boi shared a clip from an interview with DJ Jazzy Jeff in which they discuss the origins of the theme song for the classic ’90s TV show, which starred Will Smith and featured Jeff as a recurring guest star when they were a rap duo. According to Jeff, the song only took 15 minutes to complete.
“I told Will that there couldn’t be a TV show in the world where we didn’t do the theme,” Jeff said. “Literally, I made something and Will wrote something because we thought it would be a placeholder.”
Quincy Jones, the show’s executive producer, ended up liking the song so much that he used Will and Jeff’s version as the theme. The rest is history.
“I hate saying it,” Jeff continued. “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is the greatest hip-hop song in history.”
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran for six seasons from 1990 to 1997 and was highly regarded as one of the best sitcoms of its time. The show helped launch Will Smith’s acting career. A reboot of the show, “Bel-Air,” will air in 2022.
This Brentwood, California mansion was used as a facade on the original TV show and is currently on the market for around $30 million.
