Donald Trump and the Philadelphia Eagles are no longer the best of friends after turning down an invitation to the White House a few years ago. But that changed and now the Birds are on their way to Cancun or home.
Rumors of a so-called “Trump Curse” began to circulate in dark areas of the internet. The idea is hard to ignore. Teams and individuals who get too cozy with Trump often seem to get into trouble quickly.
Eagles fans are hurt and they want answers. After becoming the defending Super Bowl champions, the team was eliminated from the playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers. Lincoln Financial Field was in shambles. The season ended in confusion and recrimination.
This is where Trump steps in.
During his first term, the Eagles turned down a White House visit, a move that has become part of Philadelphia sports lore. Fast forward to the recent Super Bowl and they decided to go. Several players accepted the second invitation, including Saquon Barkley, who later relinquished any official role with Trump. Those brunch optics are a nasty job. Meanwhile, Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith stayed away from the game and earned the silent respect of us fans.
The Trump doom theory appears to be real, as the Kansas City Chiefs publicly became Trump-friendly before getting crushed by Philadelphia. They didn’t even make the playoffs at all. Now the Eagles are on the wrong side of the same conspiracy theory. Anyone who knows anything about sports knows that there is much more to sports than that.
Within the organization, there are rumors of chaos!
Coaches are questioned and players are scrutinized. Word on the street is that the offensive coordinator has been fired. Prosperity.
Next up are the players.
Is Donald Trump really responsible for the Eagles’ debacle? Probably not in any measurable way. But… maybe next year we’ll have more data.
