Ice Cube is setting the record straight, debunking Candace Owens’ wild theory that gangsta rap was “created by the FBI” as a conspiracy involving gay prison inmates.
Last week, the controversial right-wing commentator shared her bizarre take on the origins of the hip-hop subgenre. Owens said the FBI created gangsta rap and turned gay prisoners into celebrities, deliberately destroying the cultural fabric of black life in America.
“Gangsta rap has never been black culture,” Owens tweeted. “It was created by the federal government who offered deals to gay black men in prison and then turned them into artificial celebrities. The purpose was to create false idols to destroy the value of black Americans.
“I will never change my mind,” she concluded.
One user tagged gangster rap pioneer Ice Cube to ask his opinion on the baseless theory. Founding members of the NWA were quick to dismiss Owen’s claims.
“We call it Reality Rap and the industry created it Gangsta Rap,” he wrote. “The fans wanted gangsta rap, and that’s what they got. The FBI didn’t write anything about me. I’m a real MC.
This isn’t the first time Owens has made bizarre theories about hip-hop. She hit back at Eminem earlier this year after he insulted her on his album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).
“I wanted to remind people again that he was actually a gay man who was struggling internally,” Owens said. She also suggested he should retire, calling him “the white rapper we listened to in preteens and we wanted to feel edgy.”
