De La Soul died in February 2023, a founding member Trugoy Dove, at the age of 54.
As a third of the group with Posdnuos and Maseo, Trugoy played a role in shaping De La Soul’s groundbreaking voice. His death comes years after years of fighting health problems, including congestive heart failure and diabetes, but it is still shocking. But, as they said, the show must continue.
About two weeks after Trugoy’s death, De la Soul’s first album (3 feet tall and rising) (1989), de la soul is Dead (1991), Buhloone Mindstate (1993), Stakes, Stakes Is High (1996), Art Official Wisdom: Mosaic Thump (Mosaic Tump (2000) and Aoi: Aoi: Bionix (2001) – bionic (2001) – A piece of effort released on DSPS was released on DSPS. These records were a one-time effort, a one-time effort, and a one-time effort.
This gloomy (but healing) memorial that would have been one of the great men of hip-hop in full-scale celebrations at Webster Hall in New York City. Needless to say, the huge sadness Mase and Pos feels not going away and affects them every day.
“It’s crazy,” Mase told Allhiphop. “I used to be outside. It’s hard to get out. I mean, I’m enough to come out to deal with the responsibilities we need to live up to, but I like to get home soon.”

After Trugoy’s death, De La Soul continued to respect his legacy while moving forward. Last Friday (March 7), POS and MASE re-released the rare clear Idiotorium EP recorded by De La Soul in the Bulhoone Mindstate era. The project, considered the “Holy Grail” in the De La Soul catalog, was initially limited to 500 copies and initially boasted about four tracks, including one, one of which was from the late Phife Dawg.
But this is just the beginning. The third part of the art official intelligence has been in the works for years, and while it is getting closer to seeing the day’s light, Maseo hopes to present it properly.
“I hope it comes out, and I really can’t rush the creative process because I hope that ### is fire,” he said. “I’m very excited about the music we’ve been making. There’s a lot on our plate. We’ve had a lot of good questions here lately. We’re just trying to keep up with all these huge opportunities. Just creating music.”
Posdnuos is imminent. Mase added: “I talked to POS yesterday because there were some great things coming and people supported it, but he was like, ‘Mase, Man, you, you deal with S###’ because I want to rap right now.’ He was like, ‘I just want to rap.’ ””
The Dera Soul Project is expected to have a large-scale “legendary” project, but Marseo said it is still “still in creation.” Tentative features include Slick Rick, Raekwon, Pete Rock, Chuck D, Flavor Flav and DJ Premier.
“There are a lot of great people involved and that’s a part of what I think we should be,” he said. “We were asked to be involved, so I was looking forward to that. But it was definitely AOI:3.”

But for hardcore Dera Soul fans, their upcoming record with Prince Paul is probably the most exciting update. Prince Paul made the first three albums and helped define an era.
“I’m dead,” he said with a smile. “That’s New York S ### Here [laughs]. We work with Prince Paul again. It feels right. ”
Blessings keep coming. Pos and Maseo recently performed in Switzerland, and in January they performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City, where they first became the title of David Geffen Hall. Pos was nominated for a Grammy Award for his verse for Common and Pete Rock’s single “Whes the Sun Shines Again,” which appeared on the duo’s collaborative album, The Auditorium. 1.
De La Soul’s music is also featured in the Peloton Artist Series, and on February 6, Pos and Maseo released a remastered “Say No Go Go” mix series that includes the original version of The Track’s “Love House of Love” mix, “New Keys of New Keys Sotal” and other infectious “No Dope Mix Mix”.
It’s hard to imagine where Trugoy is curating all of this. Like the song “There In After” from De La Soul’s 2016 masterpiece… and the anonymous people, no one goes, “I hear you / with me / with me / walked / walked / now, but stay now / stay here / I will always put your memories.”
They would never have expected the song to lose Trugoy soon after it was written, but Maseo and Posdnuos would carry a piece of Trugoy with them for the rest of their lives. His absence is deeply felt, but his influence is the cornerstone of hip-hop culture.
