Terence Crawford demolished Las Vegas’ Canelo Alvarez on Saturday (September 13), defeating the Mexican superstar, demanding the unquestionable super middleweight crown and shaking the pound-pound hierarchy of boxing.
Crawford joined the game as a +148 loser, controlling that pace from the first round, neutralizing Canelo’s trademark power and landing cleaner, sharp throughout the 12 rounds. The judge fought 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113, and Crawford now has the championship in three different weight levels.
Omaha, Nebraska’s native’s defense and IQ are fully demonstrated when he slipped over Canelo’s heavy punch and countered with precision. Despite Canelo’s scale advantage, his blow has not shocked Crawford, who determined the rhythm and never let his opponents find it.
In the middle of the game, it was obvious that Canelo needed a knockout round to win. That moment will never come.
The victory not only enhances Crawford’s legacy, but also triggers a comparison with the boxing superstar. Floyd Mayweather, the only modern fighter with a comparable resume, retired with a 50-0 score and defeated Canelo.
Mayweather rarely speaks publicly about the upcoming battle, and he declares his opinion after the last bell. He posted a photo of a betting list on Instagram showing him singing $50,000 on Crawford to win. BET paid $74,000 in profits and gave him a total return of $124,000.
