Fat Joe revealed her mother’s death in a heartfelt message posted to social media on Saturday (May 3), respecting her selflessness and a profound impact on his life and career.
The Bronx-born rapper shared the news in a lengthy Instagram post, writing: “It’s a real post that brings my woman to rest in peace in this world. She doesn’t have much stuff, but she gives us everything.” He didn’t reveal the cause of death.
He described his mother Marie Delcarmen Cartagena as a woman with a “golden heart” who has been in the same housing project for many years despite his financial success.
He wrote: “Even if I have money, she refuses to move out of the project. She loves her community, she loves her people.”
She is affectionately known as “Ms. Ruby” and “The Thres The Proer Squad Queen” and she is the mother of her family and the entire hip-hop crew.
Fat Joe added: “She is proud of us, which means everyone in the crew.
Her generosity is well known in the vicinity. She worked three jobs to support her family and opened the door to their apartment so that anyone who needed to eat could eat.
Fat Joe often believes that his upbringing and his mother’s role model of sympathy and perseverance is the key to his success. In his tribute, he also expressed his gratitude for the time he spent with her.
He wrote: “I must thank the Father, my God has allowed me to have her life for the rest of my life.”
He suggested that her death was related to heartbreak, saying, “The truth is that she had been broken with a man for 60 years, and he recently passed away, my father, my father wanted her to be with him.”

The man was Ernesto Delgado, the father of Fate Joe, who died on February 12, 2025 at the age of 89.
His son remembers Delgado as a guiding force, teaching him the value of his family and how to become an incumbent father. Fat Joe paid tribute to him earlier this year, calling him a legend, which had a significant impact on his life.
Fat Joe ended his message with a promise: “Mom, until I see you again, you are my world, my heart, everything about me, I will continue to make you proud.”
His position was supported as social media from the hip-hop community and beyond poured into his social media.
