EST Gee has an understated charm. The rapper has a magnetic personality and has to resort to insane deliveries or outrageous flows. Always in the pocket, he creates music that’s soft yet has a sinister undercurrent. “The Streets” is a perfect example of these two dynamics coexisting in the same song. EST Gee’s latest is a no-frills street anthem where the rapper finds a catchy niche and rides it over organ-heavy instrumentals.
There’s definitely a Southern flavor to this instrumental. Organ percussion anchors the drums, then rises to the forefront during the chorus. It sounds like an instrument Young Jeezy or TI would have used twenty years ago, but with a modern update. EST Gee brings the same slick but tired delivery that TIP and Snowman perfected in their prime. The lyrics are pretty standard and fit the song’s title, but EST Gee’s belief is what really gets the song across the finish line. You believe him when he spits: “I’m slithering and shitting on the same gas I use to hold bricks.” “Streets” is another triumph for Gee.

They’ll take out my phone and spin it, don’t leave ’til he kills (ugh)

I don’t plan to invest in businesses, I plan to get rich
