Eminem, whose twelfth studio album is due out this weekend, has now revealed the album’s artwork.
On Tuesday (July 9), the Detroit MC shared a cover image of The Death of Slim Shady (Coupe De Grâce) just days ahead of its release.
According to the record’s title, the visual features the rap veteran with bleach-blonde hair and a look of surprise on his face as he’s almost completely zipped into a body bag that he’s still alive.
The look hints at his controversial Slim Shady character, now that he seems ready to retire.
Earlier this year, Eminem kicked off its launch by posting an obituary for the aforementioned alter ego that helped launch his career in the 1990s. The article, published in the Detroit Free Press in mid-May, focused on the upcoming record.
The article also included a photo of the 8 Mile star wearing a Jason Voorhees-style hockey mask, reminiscent of his youth, which the article said “fans ‘will never forget'” [The] Controversial Rapper” in the subtitle.
The body reads: “A product of Detroit, Shady began his career in the gangster schism of the burgeoning underground rap scene in the mid- to late-1990s, debuting in 1999 with his playful and frenetic single “My Name.” Become a household name.
“Ultimately, what looked like the tools he wielded became calling cards, defining an existence that could only end abruptly and horribly. His complex and painful life was over, and his legacy is no greater than the character left behind. The way of the world is closer to the solution. May he truly find the peace in the afterlife that he cannot find on earth.
So far, the D12 leader has released two singles to build anticipation for the upcoming project: “Tobey” (featuring Big Sean and BabyTron) and “Houdini.”
