This is the 18th EP from Buffalo host and singer Elcamino. He rose to fame in 2017 with the release of his self-titled EP with Griselda Records, followed by the release of the Walking on Water mixtape in the summer of 2018, and 2 studio albums and several EPs the following year. Visibility continues to grow. “They Spit Jesus” proved to be a critically acclaimed debut for Black Soprano Family Records, becoming the first Camino project I’d covered since “The Third Day” like “No Weapon Formed Against Me” Again, an improvement on some of the material we already had. Six months after Real Bad Man produced The Game is the Game, Ill Tone recently produced Built for Cuban Links, named after Raekwon’s iconic solo debut Onlybuilt 4 Cuban Linx… Produced by RZA, Meech begins the last quarter of the year showing off his Millionaire status & ends with a full moon.
“Who’s Bragging?” for whatever reason awkwardly starts things off by imitating the future, while “Legal Money” takes the atmospheric trap route and cleverly does something no one else can match. . “Forever” talks about being too valuable with some background vocals and hi-hats, while “Real” shows with energy that he’s still here to clap. “Dat’s My Bae” feels like another futuristic song, as does “Back Ballin'”, only it’s more fun. “All He Knew” ends with a flourish promising that he will do this for the rest of his life.
I don’t mean to sound like I hate this guy, because I’ve been listening to him since Elcamino first signed Griselda about 8 years ago, and have done so on over a dozen projects I’ve reviewed Praise was given to him. He can sing well and rap over trap production as well as he does in a traditional east coast sound, but the heavy future influence might turn me off a bit.
