Draymond Green invoked Cardi B while defending Hawks’ controversial Magic City Night upgrade from backlash.
Draymond Green involved Cardi B in the Atlanta Hawks Magic City controversy on his podcast.
Green defended the NBA team’s decision to celebrate the legendary strip club despite backlash from players around the league.
The Golden State Warriors forward invoked the rapper’s name while firing back at critics who claim the promotion objectifies women and makes the league complicit in mistreating women.
On “The Draymond Green Show,” Green argued that striptease was a legitimate art form and that condemning the dancers revealed more about society’s prejudices than the profession itself.
“I would point out that they have a respect issue because this is their chosen job, and I actually think there’s less protection for women because you’re condemning something that is actually an art,” Green said.
He then directly mentioned Cardi B, saying she sells out stadiums and comes from such a background and doesn’t have self-worth issues.
The Eagles announced a Magic City Night promotion on March 16, billing it as a tribute to the cultural institution.
The event will include an appearance from rapper T.I., special merchandise and the venue’s signature lemon pepper wings.
Operating since 1985, Magic City has achieved legendary status in Atlanta’s nightlife and hip-hop culture, launching countless rap careers over the decades.
San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet led the opposition, writing an open letter asking the Hawks to cancel the game.
Cornett believes the promotion makes the NBA potentially complicit in the objectification and abuse of women, noting that many in the industry have experienced abuse and harassment.
He called on the league to create an environment where fans of all ages can safely attend games.
Despite the uproar, the Eagles confirmed they would continue with the celebrations.
