Drake’s bad situation continues. The rapper’s bumps and bruises in the music industry are well-documented. In the world of sports, however, he fared no better. 6 God bet $500,000 on the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals and lost. He lost another $500,000 to the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup. The Drake Curse is already in play in 2024, and it’s striking again. On July 9, the rapper lost another huge amount of money.
Drake made his confidence in Canada Soccer clear the day before. He posted a betting stub on his Instagram Story, confirming he was backing his side to beat Argentina in the Copa America at odds of 9.6 to 1. He bet $300,000 for a potential prize of $2.88 million. Drake also couldn’t help but poke fun at Argentinian star Lionel Messi. “This could get Messi,” he wrote on the ticket. After Canada’s 2-0 loss to Argentina, one would think he wasn’t joking.
Drake loses many sports bets in 2024
Drake has been an avid supporter of Canadian soccer for many years. He included footage from a football game in his 2013 music video for “Started from the Bottom.” “Canada as a whole is an incredible melting pot,” he told FIFA president Gianni Infantino. “But in Toronto, there are so many different cultural experiences. So when the world comes, it will be beautiful.” He also claimed that “there is no passion like the passion of football.”
In recent years, the rapper has had a hard time shaking off the Drake curse. The Toronto Raptors’ storybook performance in 2019 silenced some of the criticism surrounding Drake, but his crippling losses in major sports events in 2024 have given the “curse” rhetoric a vengeance. It doesn’t help that Kendrick Lamar accused the rapper of having a gambling problem in his scathing “Meet the Grahams” diss. “You have a gambling problem, a drinking problem, a drug problem, a spending problem,” Lamar raps. “Not good for money.”
