Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s new album Missionary is out now, and of course they’re promoting it as well.
The two legendary musicians cover the latest issue of Complex, where they talk about their chemistry, reuniting for the new album, their recording process, the meaning behind the album title, working with 50 Cent and Eminem again, and working with Sting collaborations and more.
When it comes to his past iconic work, Del Rey said he doesn’t like hearing about anything he’s done in the past. “I haven’t listened to any songs since I started writing in 1985. I don’t even allow my family or anyone to play this shit around me. I feel like the process of recording is what I really enjoy. Just recording the album, I’ve had enough of it while we’re recording it, and when we’re done recording it, once it comes out, I wake up and listen to that shit and I’m ready for the next one,” he said.
Since then, he’s started talking about how he’s not inspired by anything being released now.
“…I don’t want to be disrespectful to anyone right now, but I’m not really inspired by what’s going on in hip-hop these days. It’s not for me. I always say I’m not going to disrespect it or anything like that, but I Didn’t hear anything that told me to go fuck myself, why wouldn’t I do this? I haven’t heard anything like this in a long time and it makes my job pretty easy to be honest.
The interviewer further asked Del Rey about a recent artist or album that inspired him. He responded: “Well, if you’re talking about something new, I’d say well boy, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘mAAd city’ and ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ was the last hip-hop album that inspired me.”
When talking about reuniting with 50 and Em on “Gunz N Smoke,” Dre said, “It’s a brotherhood. We all showed up for each other. None of us ever said no to each other.
He added: “The criticism is coming from Eminem. It’s like a friendly game between us. And it’s healthy. You’ll hear it. Like the way 50 came out in the first quarter. And then Snoop comes in, Then Eminem shows up and you know what the hell is going on with him and that ink pen.
