Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg are the most iconic duo in hip-hop history. Granted, they’re an official duo like Outkast or Mobb Deep, but their influence is undeniable. They codified gangsta rap into the mainstream and mentored generations of West Coast artists. Dre and Snoop are both mythical figures at this point. That’s what makes the story of their early years so fascinating. It’s nice to hear they’re becoming more relatable and less of a bad example. Dr. Dre told fans this story in a recent interview.
On June 19, the two spoke to Capital Xtra about their thirty-year friendship. Snoop Dogg detailed his admiration for Dr. Dre, calling him his “brother.” He also praised the producer for his business acumen and sound financial advice over the years. “I just love being with him in the studio and in real life,” Snoop explained. Dr. Dre appreciated this, but he took the interview in a more comedic tone. He decided to tell a story about a double date where he and Snoop were on a blind date. Dre recalls feeling excited when they went to pick up their date. Until he realizes that the woman he’s obsessed with is actually Snoopy’s girl.
Dr Dre records a classic song the day after double date
“I thought it was mine, but it wasn’t,” Dr. Dre recalled jokingly. “Snoopy pushed me aside as if to say ‘No, because, that’s me.'” When I turned that corner and saw mine, I was really disappointed. To make matters worse, the pair had to drive through a storm to get there. “We drove an hour through Katrina to get there, and I was very disappointed,” the producer reiterated. Incredibly, there is a silver lining to this story. While Dr. Dre’s double date didn’t go as planned, the producer went into the studio the next day to record “Nothin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.” The 1992 song became a hit and became a signature for him and Snoop.
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg are as close as ever. The two artists are working on the album Missionary, which is said to be the sequel to Snoop’s 1993 debut album Doggystyle. Dr Dre will produce the album and has been working with Snoop on and off for the past two years. Snoop Dogg promises “Preacher” will be worth the wait as it will showcase a mature side of his musical persona. “[Dr Dre] “I’m like a f**king robot, and I love it because I love being produced,” he told Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s All the Smoke podcast. “I love being challenged… . … [the album is] Master level.
