Doechii won the Best Female Hip Hop Artist Award at the 2025 BET Awards and delivered a fierce acceptance speech that convened President Trump and addressed injustice.
Doechii wins Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the 2025 BET Awards
On Monday (June 9), the BET Awards are live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Over the past year, TDE’s Doechii has been declared the best female hip-hop artist champion. She beat Cardi B, Doja Cat, Glorilla, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Rapsody and Sexyy Red.
Doechii addressed protests and injustice in a fierce acceptance speech
After thanking the bet and yelling at her companion nominee, Doechii posted a vibrant monologue about ongoing protests in downtown Los Angeles in response to the recent federal ice attack.
“While I am honored by this award, I do want to address what is happening outside the building,” Doechii said in the video below. “There are some ruthless attacks that create fear and chaos in our community in the name of law and order.”
She added: “Trump is using the military to stop protests. I hope everyone thinks about what kind of government it seems to be whenever we exercise the right to democratic protest, and the military will deploy it to us. What type of government is that?
“People are being swept and torn apart by their families, and I feel the responsibility as artists to use this moment to speak for all oppressed people. For black people, for Latinos, for Latinos, for trans, for people in Gaza, we should all live in hope and not fear. I want us to be together, my brothers and my sisters, our brothers and my sisters, we are against hatred, protesting.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week began to assemble Los Angeles residents around. Los Angeles residents who were considered illegal foreigners last week began, with protests against immigration attacks last week. The ICE report said 118 people were arrested on June 7, in a series of raids in the Los Angeles area, “including five gang members and numerous criminal foreigners.” In response, the protests began at the Metropolitan Detention Center, leading to police deploying tear gas and pepper spray on Sunday (June 8). The protests continue today.
President Trump threatens to send 2,000 National Guard members to “resolve the violations.” But California Gov. Gavin Newsom flinched, claiming that Trump’s threat was just “tense.”
Performers and nominees for the 2025 BET Awards
Performers at this year’s event include Playboi Carti, Glorilla, Lil Wayne, Mariah Carey, Teyana Taylor, Ti, Bow Bow and more. Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx, Kirk Franklin and Mariah Carey will receive the Ultimate Idol Award.
Kendrick Lamar leads all artists with 10 nominations. His nods include GNX Album of the Year, “Don’t Like Us” Video of the Year and nominations for three Audience Choice Awards “Don’t Like Us”, “Luther”, featuring SZA and featuring Future and Metro Boomin. Additionally, he was recognized in the Best Cooperation Categories of “Like This,” “30 for 30” and “Luther” and was recognized by SZA (Sza), a video director of the year at Dave Free and Best Male Hip Hop Artist.
