Diddy allegedly threatened to see the former Vibe editor-in-chief “die in the trunk of a car” after she didn’t allow him to alter the cover photo.
Diddy allegedly threatens magazine editor
On Friday (July 12), Danyel Smith, former editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief of Vibe, penned an article in The New York Times Magazine detailing her experience working with Diddy at the magazine. Diddy appeared on the cover of the magazine’s December 1997/January 1998 issue. In the cover photo, Puff looks into the camera through tinted shadows, with white angel wings spread behind him. The story is titled “The Good, the Bad, and the Bloated.”
Smith wrote that Dee Dee allegedly violated magazine policy by forcing her to see the cover before publication. In response, Diddy showed up at Vibe’s offices with his entourage of bad boys and began looking for Smith. To avoid him, she was taken out through the back door by staff.
The next day, Smith claims Diddy called her and threatened her, saying he knew where she was. He then allegedly told Smith that if he didn’t get a premium copy of the magazine, he would see her “dead in the trunk of the car.” Paff also reportedly told Smith “fuck you” after he asked him to apologize. After speaking with her attorney, Paff allegedly faxed an apology to Smith’s office days later.
However, the magazine’s servers were soon stolen from Vibe’s offices. Smith immediately identified Dee Dee and his crew as the culprits. Fortunately, a staff member saved a copy of the cover on her personal server, so the issue went on as planned.
In the lengthy op-ed, Smith detailed the many disturbing moments she witnessed with Diddy, including one at a party where Diddy threw Kim Bo before asking her to go home. The contents of the wallet were thrown out.
