Death Row Records is having a great moment. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, two artists who ushered in the label’s golden era, have just released their reunion album, Missionary. Fans and critics generally agree that Snoop and Del Rey still have magic. This magic continues into “Death Row Revue.” Snoop Dogg oversaw this compilation, which proves that the classic Death Row sound is still as relevant as ever, thanks to some clean production and excellent editing.
Snoop Dogg only appears in one song, but it’s one of the best songs here. “Unbelievable” is an impressive fusion of ’90s G-Funk and King George’s passionate vocal performance. Meanwhile, Snoop stops by for a clean guest verse. Other standouts from the Death Row Revue include Danny Boy’s ballad “Special Kind of Fool” and Jenn Em’s “I’m Ready.” The former is one of the singer’s best songs to date, and the latter is an upbeat R&B song reminiscent of the 1980s. Snoop Dogg narrates the segments between each song, giving the album a visual feel and cohesiveness. Nothing earth-shattering here, but if you like West Coast music, you’ll love Death Row Revue.
