Donald Trump confirmed that the man suspected of killing Charlie Kirk had been detained during a speech at Utah Valley University, ending a tense 48-hour raid that attracted national attention.
“I think we took him in custody, we took him in custody,” Trump said on Fox & Friends Friday morning (September 12).
Kirk, 31, was shot dead while speaking on Wednesday (September 10) at a student on Orem, Utah campus.
The shooter opened his shot from the roof and then fled the nearby woods on foot. Surveillance footage captures a man in black sprints. The FBI restored a Mauser 30-06 bolt-wrapped rifle wrapped in a towel.
Trump said the suspect was described as 28 or 29 years old and handed over himself after the minister acknowledged him and contacted his father.
“The father convinced his son,” Trump said. “They drove into the police headquarters, and he is there now.”
The suspect’s identity has not been released by law enforcement. FBI Director Kash Patel is expected to provide more details at a press conference late Friday.
Kirk co-founded the American Turnaround Point at the age of 18, becoming an outstanding figure in conservative youth politics. His organization helped mobilize thousands of young voters and played a major role in Trump’s political foundation.
Trump also announced that Kirk will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his death and confirmed that he will attend the funeral in Arizona.
