Cardi B fired critics and praised the creative collaboration while accepting the ASCAP voice of the Culture Awards at a private ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 8).
The Bronx rapper uses her moments on stage to address her long-term criticism of songwriting, which makes it clear that teamwork does not remove authenticity.
“I hate the idea that if you don’t write every line yourself, it makes what you say not true,” she said. “Music is a collaboration all the time. Hot singles, the greatest records come from teamwork. They come from sharing experience, energy, pain and joy. It’s not about self, it’s about impact, and I love my team.”
She continued: “I write, I write, I write, I rewrite. I speak to my truth. My pen, my thoughts, my feelings in every scripture, every hook is in every hook, and I respect every writer who brings magic to the table. This award is not only for me. It is for my culture, for every writer, to help shape it, let us do something. Let us continue to push our capabilities.

Cardi B captures heat online
The comments are amid a rebound from some hip-hop purists who think rappers should write every bar themselves.
“It’s embarrassing culture,” one critic wrote.
Another added: “So she basically said – she doesn’t write her own rap – it’s a collaboration/teamwork.
However, not everyone is very critical. Supporters praised Cardi B for his honesty and influence. “I’m proud of you.
ASCAP President Paul Williams praised “redefining and challenging women’s norms” in hip-hop and called her “unapologetically authenticity and talent” a force in culture.
