Cardi B knows she opened a musical door for other women in rap to dominate the music industry like they do now.
In Rolling Stone’s June 2024 cover story, the Bronx superstar reflects on her impact on the sport since signing with Atlantic Records in 2017 and taking the world by storm with “Bodak Yellow.”
“These labels don’t believe in representing new rap artists,” Cardi said. “People from every label were telling me this shit to my face. After I signed, they started signing new female rappers. Is there some bitch who can be the greatest rapper?” [or] They just make great music — and at the end of the day, guess what? They’re on your playlist now.
She continued: “I know for a fact that I am a staple. I know for a fact that I [opened] A fucking door.I know a fact that I [can] Gabby. I know I’m really successful. Sometimes people try to belittle me, like, ‘No, I’m that bitch and you all fucking know it.
Back in 2018, just a year after the success of “Bodak Yellow,” Cardi B dropped her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, and completely dominated the scene. She scored a No. 1 hit on the Billboard 200 album chart, won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards, and earned multiple chart-topping singles and platinum certifications in the process.
Six years later, however, she has yet to produce a follow-up, but she has promised on more than one occasion that fans will see her long-awaited second album in 2024.
But earlier this week, she made good on her promise in a since-deleted tweet, saying she wouldn’t be sitting out again this year and would just be enjoying the summer. However, the post seemed to be made out of frustration, as she was upset about fans pushing her for new music. Her rep has since told Rolling Stone that “the plan remains to release the album in 2024.”
As for what to expect from the LP, the venerable publication reports that as of March, the record is partially complete but still needs an introduction, at least three songs, a title, features and a rollout plan.
So far, Cardi has given fans a taste of what to expect from her second album with her single “Enough (Miami).” The song comes two weeks after she dropped the “Like What (Freestyle)” sample of Missy Elliot’s 1999 hit “She’s a Bitch.”
