Canadian leaders include Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford vowed strong revenge on new U.S. tariffs.
According to USA Today, the country’s top leader promised to “the United States is suffering” after President Donald Trump ended a delay in tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Now, most Canadian import taxes are in effect 25%. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hit $20.7 billion in U.S. imports with 25% tariffs, which would be expanded if Trump’s tariffs were retained.
Trudeau said on March 4: “Agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald pointed out that even if you are a very smart person, it’s a very stupid thing to do,” he said.
In another sentence, Trudeau criticized Trump for being consistent with Russia and Vladimir Putin, who described as a totalitarian, as well as other violent nicknames.
“Today, the United States launched a trade war against Canada, with their closest partners and their closest friends and allies,” Trudeau said. “At the same time, they are talking about actively working with Russia to make Vladimir Putin lie, murder the dictator. It makes sense,” said a clearly angry Trudeau.
Ford supported Trudeau’s measures and boosted Ontario’s response by distributing U.S. alcohol from distributing and canceling a contract with Elon Musk. The Prime Minister also announced a 25% surcharge for energy exports to New York, Michigan and Minnesota, warning that he could cut off supplies if the tariffs persist.
“The tariffs on Canada are taxes on Americans and I will do everything I can to reduce their energy with the energy on a smiling face,” Ford said.
Ontario, Canada’s second largest energy producer, imports mainly from Quebec and exports electricity to the United States. Although most Canadian imports now face a 25% tariff, the energy rate is 10%.
“Unemployment, inflation will happen, and it will hurt the American people,” Ford warned. “You need to speak out with Donald Trump and speak out for your people. That’s what we do in Canada.”
