Cady and comedy? Hip-hop is forever allergic to staying in its lane. We have TI out there doing his thing. Now, the artist formerly known for emo rapping, moonwalking, and humming his feelings is on a mission to make people laugh. If this continues, TI may have to slide his throne a few inches.
Cudi comes in as a stand-up comic that feels casual unless you think about it for more than five seconds. This is a man whose entire career has been built on personal insecurities, honesty, and speaking the quiet parts out loud. He is a hero among misfits. This makes comedy an interesting proposition. According to his own Instagram message, he just finished his first comedy, calling it funny and saying he did a great job. I believe him. Not because I was there, but because Cudi has been living with awkward truths for twenty years, and awkward truths are comedy gold.
Here’s what he had to say:
“Hearing people laughing and enjoying my show really touched my heart and I felt so nervous, a different kind of nervousness I’ve never felt before. When I walked off the stage I felt a excitement I’ve never felt before. I want to say to everyone who showed their love, to all my friends who were there, and to all the comics on the bill who supported me and cheered me on, thank you so much!!!”
What makes this moment extra exciting is the timing. Cudi just made headlines after an incident involving Sean “Diddy” Combs, which allegedly included a car that was firebombed. This alone would be a five minute opening if he decided to go completely scorched earth…comedy. Then there’s the trauma of the music industry, the whiplash of fame, and even Kanye West. That’s a lot of life lessons. Imagine the punchline? I’m thinking Ali or Mike Tyson.
Cady Boy has always been a depressed loner…but will that always be the case? Well. He openly evolved. Comedy is like another chapter for me. As for inspiration, no one knows. I have a sneaking suspicion about Dave Chappelle, but that’s pure speculation. Cudi said nothing. For now, that’s all we know. The hip-hop comedy just welcomed a new cast member.
