British-born rapper Rashid Gedel Broadday has been charged with murdering disgraced former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins, who was stabbed to death at the maximum security HMP Wakefield prison in West Yorkshire on Saturday morning.
The 25-year-old rapper and another prisoner, Samuel Dodsworth, 43, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Monday (October 12). Both men confirmed their names but did not enter pleas, BBC News reported.
The pair have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear before a Crown Court judge at a later date.
Watkins, a former chart-topping rocker, is serving a 29-year sentence for a series of child sex crimes, including attempted rape of babies.
He was convicted in 2013 and branded a “dangerous sexual predator” by prosecutors and the public.
The fatal attack took place inside Wakefield Prison, which is often referred to as the “Monster Tower” due to the high-risk criminals it houses.
The facility was placed on lockdown after the stabbing while authorities investigated the killing and reviewed internal security protocols.
This is not the first time Watkins has faced violence in prison. In 2023, he survived another attack with minor injuries.
Broddy’s latest charges add to his already lengthy criminal record. In August 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the 2021 stabbing death of 22-year-old lawyer Sven Badzak.
The attack, which took place in Kilburn, northwest London, was reported to be a case of mistaken identity.
Goedel and co-defendant Shiroh Ambersley were part of a six-man gang that targeted the wrong people in what police said was a gang-style ambush.
Bazak was stabbed multiple times, fell to the ground, and died on the spot. His 16-year-old friend also suffered multiple stab wounds but managed to escape and seek help at a nearby shop.
Goedel and Ambersley were each sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 27 years for Bazak’s murder.
