Bold James’ rap style is an acquired taste for some. It’s conversational yet persistent. He sounded like he had a lot to say, but he didn’t sound rushed or panicked at all. Some even described his voice as monotone. But his bar and his consistency are undeniable. When Bold James is paired with the right producer, he doesn’t miss out. RichGains is an example of a suitable producer. The two have teamed up for new album Murder Within Drug Traffic, a smooth, stylish pop hit that fans of the genre will love.
The atmosphere of “Murder in the Age of Drugs” is cleverly set by the opening song “Achilles”. Bold James sings a series of contemplative verses over a high-pitched vocal sample. The rhythm and Boldy’s bar blend together for an exciting and head-shaking experience. The rest of the album follows suit. In “Janky” Boldy James rides an absolute gem of jazz samples from RichGains. “Days Go By” and “Made Men” experiment with unfamiliar sounds and vocal samples, but Boldy James’ impeccable flow keeps the album consistent and coherent. There isn’t a bad song on “Drug Murder.” All we can do is enjoy and hope that Boldy and RichGains decide to work together again.
