This is the third EP from Detroit, Michigan emcee Big Trip. As a member of the group The Umbrella, he released his debut EP Bullet Tooth Tony in 2021, followed by another Crasseux debut album Filth Be Thy Name. All of this shows the underworld what Big Trip can do on his own, but it feels like Honestly Filthy will get a boost now that Maryland host and producer Jamil Honesty has jumped behind the scenes.
“And Now You Know” begins with a brutal introduction to his refined voice, while “Death Wish” takes a booming rhythm route and subtly talks about all the people who want him dead. “Serenade” features a delightful soul sample that encourages getting rich by being a real person doing real things, before “Underplays & Overlays” features Ty Farris hanging on the kick and snare On one side, talk about how to make drama.
Beginning with the second half of the EP, “Major League” gives them an icy feel over a jazzy beat, while “Gillie & Wallo,” featuring Jamil Honesty, compares himself to the $1 million game host of the same name people. “Dirty Cabaret” gives the middle finger to fame and imposters who just want money, and finally, “Life is a Gamble” ends with Honest Dirty talking some brutal shit, likening his squad to Gorilla and whip in the tank like Master P.
As the fourth project Big Trip has released in the three years since he started making waves in the underground, it now surpasses everything he’s done before, quickly taking over the #1 spot and becoming the crown jewel of his entire project. ‘s discography. Jamil Honesty’s carefully crafted production is an excellent refinement of what you’re used to hearing from Trip, with the Detroit host chronicling some of the hardest bars of his career.
