Detroit, Michigan’s Big Trip emcee reunites with Jamil Honesty for his fourth EP. As a member of the group The Umbrella, he released his first EP Bullet Tooth Tony in 2021, followed by another EP Crasseux and of course his full debut album Filth Be Thy Name. All of this shows Underworld what Big Trip is capable of on his own, but Honestly Filthy will elevate him, and the sequel is shaping up to maintain the classic caliber they reached just over four months ago.
The piano-driven Boom Bap intro says other people can’t go out until they speak out, while Jamil Honesty and Snotty’s “Wave Runners” finds the trio actively branding themselves as trendsetters. In “Ice Wood,” Mvck Nyce pays homage to the late, great Blade Icewood.
“Clout Chasers” skips a vocal sample, observing the real drought here in this day and age, while “In the Filth We Trust” returns to a boom beat, talking about trying to get out of the mire with no luck. . Gold Mouth, starring Mickey Diamond, maintains a dusty edge as they shit together in the streets, but then the outro brings back the exact same beat as the intro, making it so special. Rip can once again talk about being destined to shine.
For me personally, the reason “Honestly Filthy” is the best work on Big Trip’s entire discography is because it perfectly completes everything you’ve heard from him before, and the sequel takes it to a whole new level level. His hardcore lyricism and Jamil Honesty’s boom-bap production carried over from the previous album to the follow-up, only their chemistry was strengthened further.
