If you thought hip-hop gave us enough good music this year, think again. Big L may be gone but not forgotten, his music is vibrant and his new music is on the way. In fact, the first taste is here.
Thanks to Mass Appeal, you can now listen to the Big L x Nas record. The song is called “u ain’t got a opportunity” and has been released with Visualizer! The song marks the beginning of Big L’s album rollout, which is part of Mass Appeal’s efforts to pay tribute to the hip-hop legend through its Legend Has It… campaign.
Big L was only 24 years old when he died young. There’s a lot of music that never saw the light of day, but with a new album coming soon, fans can relive the hip-hop era once again through Big L’s lyrics. What’s more, Jay Z and Nas are in it!
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Nas sent flowers to the rappers. “Big L was always ahead of his time. There were things I said about Big L, like how good he was, that made me have to up my game. We were both signed to Columbia Records and I thought the world never had a chance to get Big L the way they wanted,” Nas commented.
“It’s a blessing to have a celebration like this for him, and it reminds people that there are different variations of hip-hop, and they’re all bad, but for lyricists, Big L is the standard. A lot of people are out there rapping safely because Big L doesn’t exist anymore. There’s a lot of stuff floating around today that’s really bad. This album will remind you that it’s not about hype, it’s about the art.
That’s what Big L is doing on this album, reminding the world, reminding New York that as much as you should try and play different styles that suck, never forget where this shit comes from. At the root of it all is serious talent,” he said in acknowledging the legend’s legacy.
