Rumors that BET has suspended the Hip Hop Awards and the Soul Train Awards have been confirmed.
BET CEO announces suspension of hip-hop and soul train awards
On Tuesday (August 5), Billboard released an interview with BET CEO Scott Mills, who reflected on the channel’s 45th anniversary. Mills revealed in a dull note that BET will no longer air the Hip Hop and Soul Train Awards of the Year.
“I want to say that they are no longer they are no longer theirs are no longer our team has to reimagine their ever-changing media landscape for them,” Mills said. “I think we’ll see more people hiring franchises and say, ‘This may start on linear TV, but now I’m going to move it to another space. Will I move it to streaming? Or to move it to another platform?’ So for BET linear, we paused the Soul Train and the Hip Hop awards.”
Although these two awards have been shown, there may be hope in the future.
“We have a team that actively thinks about the best life that these awards performances might live as the media atmosphere continues to evolve,” Mills added. “They have not disappeared. We still have won the NAACP Image Award and the Excellent Award.”
The end of the times?
The BET HIP HOP Awards are a branch of the BET Awards, which originally started in 2006. It took place in Atlanta for the first 10 years and has since been held in Miami and Las Vegas. Last year’s awards ceremony was held in Sin City, hosted by Fat Joe.
The Soul Train Awards is an awards ceremony to honor the best history of Black Culture named after the long-time TV show of the same name. The first STA was in 1987. The ceremony lasts until 2007 every year. The bet resumed the awards ceremony in 2009 and began airing until 2023, marking the last game.
