The rumors are true: Ashanti and Nelly are expecting their first child. Ashanti announced her pregnancy in a Proov ad on Wednesday (April 17).
“I need about nine months,” she declares in the video, tagging Nelly in the Instagram post.
This will be Nelly’s fifth child and Ashanti’s first. Social media exposed the pregnancy rumors for months.
The couple sparked rumors last December when they seemed to hint that Ashanti was pregnant during an interaction at Nellie’s Black and White Ball. The speculation grew further when Ashanti appeared to hide her baby bump while performing at a show with Ja Rule in January. The singer’s mother and manager, Tina Douglas, struggled to keep the secret a secret during a panel discussion in March.
“There haven’t been any announcements yet,” Douglas said. “It’s not out yet, but, you know, not until I hear it from Ashanti and Nelly.”
She added: “No, it’s public. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been officially announced yet.
Ashanti and Nelly rekindled their romance in 2023. Ashanti discussed their breakup in a 2015 interview on The Meredith Viera Show.
“I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, they behave out of character,” Ashanti said. “I feel betrayed. I feel like you just have to grow up. You have to grow up. You have to take responsibility for what you do. I don’t really like people being cowards.
Ashanti and Nelly reunited at the 2021 Fat Joe and Ja Rule Verzuz Battle. The love story came full circle when the couple confirmed they were back together in 2023.
