Angela Bassett played the commander-in-chief twice on screen this year and said she hopes her portrayal helps bring the White House path to a real woman.
The two-time Oscar nominee plays President Erika Sloane in the upcoming summer blockbuster: Impossible – The Final Estimate and Previously Played President Evelyn Mitchell in the Netflix political thriller Zero Day.
“Whenever I portray them, I hope and wait for a day when life imitates art. Obviously, we are not there yet,” Bassett told people.
Bassett has long been outspoken about the importance of representation and believes her presidential role may help viewers imagine new possibilities.
“Maybe it’s some people who see the representatives. We always talk about seeing our own ideas in movies and dramas, seeing possible, human interactions,” she said. “So I think … the way this movie is ideal, so one day, one day. We’ll get there.”
In recent years, the United States has elected a female president twice, with Hillary Clinton for the first time in 2016 and then with Kamala Harris in 2024.
Both lost to Donald Trump, who won 312 votes against Harris in the recent election.
