Doechii shared a lengthy statement on social media Wednesday night discussing the importance of hip-hop and the evolution of the genre. Her popularity continues to soar in 2024 with the release of her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. On social media in recent days, some users have criticized her music for being too dark.
“Our music has always been very deep,” she begins. “It’s always been sophisticated, and it’s always been soulful/spiritual. We use hip-hop to evolve. Protest. Celebrate. Etc. Art/music plays a big role in why many of us are proud to be black today. We The culture is to not let these people brainwash you and disconnect you from the soul of hip-hop by making you believe that hip-hop is not cool or “too esoteric.” It has always been so profound for us and it should stay that way when we created it! “

She continued, “No one should be redefining our art form but us. Anyone who talks about hip-hop that makes you think or makes you feel something should immediately be viewed as an opponent. Just ask. themselves, what do they gain from us downplaying our art form? “Music, taking the soul out and only discussing superficial topics, becoming less conscious, only a select group of people benefit from us not being introspective.” “
