Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz now serve as executive producers on the Kwame Brathwaite documentary, which won multiple awards.
Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz will serve as executive producers on a documentary honoring one of the most influential photographers in black history.
The two music powerhouses have just joined the creative team behind “Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story,” bringing their star power to a project that’s already making a huge splash on the festival circuit.
The move signifies the cultural importance of Kwame Brathwaite’s legacy.
The 17-time Grammy Award-winning singer and producer, along with Grammy Award-winning artist Swizz Beatz, is now part of the executive producer lineup for Wayfarer Studios, Misfits Entertainment and Mediawan Documentary.
According to Deadline , the news comes after the film’s sold-out premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best British Discovery.
The documentary is progressing well, winning the Best Documentary Award at the 34th Pan-African Film Festival in Los Angeles and premiering at DOC in New York to an overwhelming response.
Directed by Yemi Bamiro, the documentary tells the story of photographer and activist Kwame Brathwaite, who has spent more than sixty years capturing the visual essence of black culture and identity.
Starting in Harlem in the 1950s until his death in 2023, Brathwaite took approximately half a million photographs.
His work documents everyday life on the streets, as well as intimate footage of legends such as Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Nina Simone and the Jackson 5.
His photography became the visual backbone of the transformative Black Is Beautiful movement, fundamentally changing how black identity was expressed and celebrated.
This project demonstrates how music and film continue to intersect to tell culturally important stories.
The film’s momentum toward wider release suggests the documentary is positioned to appeal to audiences well beyond the festival circuit.
