Midwestern rappers Aj Snow have just released their latest tape, What the Game Been Missing, which is the follow-up to their previous project, The Game Don’t Deserve Me. On this new album, Snow continues to display smooth, lyrical flow and an ability to balance introspection and bravado.
The project kicks off with “Choosey Lover,” which samples the Isley Brothers’ iconic chorus. Here, Snow delves into intimate expressions that set the tone for the rest of the album. This brings us to “How to Stunt,” where, with the help of KoolKidKlavo, Snow confidently demonstrates how to pull off stunts in the game, giving a glimpse into their sublime reality.
“92 Corvette” reflects Snow’s journey from humble beginnings to his current rise in the competition. The track painted a picture of a fast-paced street, symbolizing their upward trajectory. “File Mignon” continues this theme, with Snow rapping about how their appetites (both metaphorical and literal) grow as their careers progress. “Eric B. & Rakim” acknowledged the setbacks and losses along the way, but highlighted how Snow managed to bounce back stronger.
The project then transitioned to “Dry Wine,” in which Snow reflected on their efforts and the results they were seeing. The song features EDF and Quiet Money Dot, adding a layer of depth to the song’s exploration of success. “Spend the Night” and “2:17” offer a more intimate flow, focusing on Snow’s relationships and personal desires while showing their readiness to go all-out in pursuit of their partners and their ambitions.
The album ends with “Princess Diana,” a song that highlights Snow’s work ethic and lifestyle, while “Mimosa in Miami” contrasts their past and present, reflecting on how far they’ve come and where they are today. Progress made in life.
What the Game Been Missing was produced by Kellzeternal, Sledgren, Jansport J and DJ Fresh, each of whom contributed to the album’s diverse soundscape.
Album Rating: 4.5/5
